The World Furniture Outlook 2024 report analyses the slump in the global furniture industry throughout 2023 and anticipates a gradual recovery in 2024 and 2025.
According to CSIL estimates, in 2024, a decline in consumer confidence and weakened furniture demand, particularly in Europe and North America, are expected. Globally, furniture consumption is forecasted to experience a slight decrease in real terms in 2024, with a potential resume in 2025.
2023 has been a very bad year for the international trade of furniture, but above the pre-pandemic level. Projections for 2024 and 2025 suggest a slow recovery, with positive growth in current US$ expected in 2025, marking the first time in four years.

World production of office seating amounts to USD 15 billion in 2023, and it is almost stable compared to last year. According to CSIL, the leading manufacturers of office chairs worldwide are China, the United States, Germany, India, and Japan.
The contamination between spaces of work and residential contexts is a trend that was already in progress but has gone through rapid acceleration over the last years, with repercussions on the design of spaces and products. The potential market for office seating manufacturers expanded to the home office, where they are expected to have considerable opportunities.
In fact, the weight of office seating in the total office furniture business increased significantly over the last few years. Today, office seating represents 30% of the world production (28% in 2018).

he United States is the largest market for upholstered furniture worldwide, with a market value of US$ 23.5 billion. Approximately 40% of the consumption is met by imported products, which also makes the US the leading importer of upholstered furniture globally. Asia and the Pacific account for a remarkable share of total imports, with China being the primary contributor, although decreasing its share in favor of Vietnam and Mexico.
The latter has become an attractive destination for foreign manufacturing investments, mainly driven by the rapidly evolving US trade policies, together with the necessity to mitigate vulnerability to supply chain disruptions, and the need to reduce the time-to-market (nearshoring).

According to CSIL, the online mattress market is expected to reach $15 billion in 2023. This marks a slight decrease in online mattress sales compared to the peak year in 2021, although the decline is less pronounced than what has been observed in the overall mattress retail market.
After hypergrowth in online sales and the propensity to buy online in 2020 and 2021, in most countries, a stabilisation of e-commerce incidences is expected to occur in 2023.
North America remains the largest market for mattresses sold online, followed by Asia Pacific. In Asia, China dominates the market, while South Korea has one of the highest online penetration shares and India is one of the fastest-growing markets for online mattresses. Europe ranks third, with the United Kingdom and Germany being the largest markets in the region.

On the other hand, Canada and Mexico are net exporters with a positive trade balance which progressively improved over the last years.

According to CSIL, the world mattress market, valued at approximately US$ 30 billion, has witnessed steady growth over the past decade except for a remarkable surge in 2021. However, in 2022, the market experienced a decline in demand, particularly in the latter half of the year, primarily due to inflationary pressures affecting consumer spending. This resulted in a contraction of the global market.
Overall, despite the temporary contraction witnessed in the mattress market, there are positive trends and drivers indicating potential growth in the coming years.

According to CSIL, the international trade of furniture, which is currently worth around USD 188 billion, has grown faster than furniture production over the past decade. In the three-year period 2020-2022, we have witnessed sharp variations mainly due to the combined effects of the pandemic and inflation, with no specific structural significance. The outlook for international furniture trade in 2023 and 2024 is positive, partly due to lower transport costs.
The United States confirms its position as the largest world importer of furniture, followed at a distance by Germany, the United Kingdom, and France.

The office furniture sector in Europe is showing signs of recovery, exceeding the pre-pandemic levels. Growth is however strongly influenced by rising inflation. According to CSIL, office furniture production values increased by a remarkable +13% in 2022, driven by double-digit price increases. Consequently, the actual volume of production in Europe grew moderately.
Over the past years, we have witnessed the acceleration of various structural processes that have resulted in the demand for more flexible office spaces, multi-format environments, and remote working locations including private homes. These changes have had a noticeable impact, leading to significant shifts in the market share of different product segments.

European furniture consumption in 2022 has followed upward, reaching nearly EUR 120 billion. The largest markets are Germany, the UK, France, and Italy, which also rank among the top ten furniture markets worldwide.
CSIL estimates that furniture demand in Europe will weaken in 2023, mainly due to elevated inflation and soaring furniture prices. It is forecasted to resume in 2024.

The decrease in sales of the Top 200 furniture manufacturers in 2020 had been contained comparing the world furniture production, driven by larger financial capabilities that allowed leading companies to quickly re-align business strategies, implement new sales channels, and reposition their supply chain. Preliminary results show that, even in 2022, the Top 200 companies maintained the same level as in 2021 despite a decrease in world furniture production.

World office furniture production reached a total value of US$ 52.4 billion in 2022. After its drop in 2020 due to the consequences of the pandemic, it showed a double-digit rebound in 2021 and a following slight downgrade in 2022. The global office furniture industry is highly concentrated; China, the US, Germany, India, and Japan are the main world output countries.
The office furniture sector remains a relatively local business. The ratio of exports over production is growing but remains low compared to the furniture sector. The bulk of office furniture exports originates in China, Canada, Germany, Poland and Italy and mainly flows to the US, Germany, France, the UK the Netherlands.

This study offers a comprehensive picture of the global office furniture sector, providing basic data for production, consumption imports and exports for the time series 2013-2022* (*preliminary), international trade and major trading partners, world tables and economic indicators, market prospects up to 2024, summary tables for the 60 most important countries for office furniture production, consumption and trade, profiles of the 50 leading office furniture manufacturers on a global level and a focus on the Top 20 office furniture countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam) which also includes major office furniture manufacturers by turnover (over 400 companies in total) with short profiles of the main ones.
International trade of furniture, worthing currently around USD 187 billion according to CSIL’s preliminary estimates, has grown faster than furniture production in the last ten years and has consistently amounted to about 1% of international trade of manufactures. The leading global importers of furniture are the USA, Germany, the UK, and France, accounting for about 48% of the total furniture imports.
The uncertainties caused by the war in Ukraine, the supply chain constraints, the logistics issues, and the strong inflationary pressures, together with the devaluation of major currencies in relation to the USD, are countervailing factors that drove an apparent stagnation in 2022. According to CSIL, world furniture consumption will decrease slightly in real terms in 2023, but growth should resume in 2024.
The new edition of the CSIL Report ‘World furniture outlook’ is now available. More details at https://www.worldfurnitureonline.com/research-market/world-furniture-outlook-0058524.html

With a +18% yearly growth in the period 2019-2022, the e-commerce furniture market has evolved rapidly in recent years, growing faster than the whole furniture market. The United States is the largest world e-commerce marketplace, with the highest penetration rate, followed by China.
The swiftly changing worldwide scenario strongly influences the e-commerce channel evolution. Following the booming performance during the pandemic, the market has been impacted by the consequences of the war in Ukraine, energy and food shortages, and strong inflationary pressures.
Also, the e-commerce competitive arena is showing some turbulence. Online sales of furniture are downgrading giving an advantage to the omnichannel retailers (brick & click) which are showing resilience to the weak market conditions, maximising physical stores’ potential in combination with the virtual experience.

Europe plays a key role in the global furniture industry, not only in terms of production value but also in terms of market and international trade. With a value in the range of Euro 108 million, it is the second-largest furniture consuming area, accounting for one-quarter of the global furniture market. In 2021, all the European countries surpassed their 2019 market size, thus fully rebounding from the pandemic, although with different performances.
The European market is highly integrated, with major chains and manufacturers working on a European scale. However, slight but continuing market openness is registered. With over 1 million workers employed in nearly 130,000 manufacturing firms, Europe is the headquarters of some of the biggest and most important global players. According to CSIL, nearly 90 out of the top 200 world furniture manufacturers are based in Europe.

he world mattress market amounts to around USD 35 billion. It is a growing sector if looking at the last ten years, and the main growth drivers include a continuous increase in spending and evolving consumption habits of the emerging countries giving more importance to the quality of sleep, and good performance of advanced economies, which registered moderate growth.
The world trade of mattresses shows an escalating number of restrictive trade measures imposed by the USA on imports from China first, and from other export-oriented countries starting from 2021. Measures are impacting trade flows also in terms of manufacturers’ strategies for competitive advantages and production relocation.

The world market for high-end furniture is worth approximately USD 50 billion. North America and Asia and the Pacific, including China, are the main markets.
The world high-end furniture market saw exceptional growth in 2021, determined mainly by the rebound from the market decline observed in 2020, and the exceptional demand experienced in most countries in the wake of the lockdown periods.

The European market for office furniture amounts to around EUR 9 billion. Consumption of office furniture in Europe is sustained by booming imports values coming from the European continent for about 60%, while the remaining part mainly from Asia-Pacific, particularly China.
Profound transformations are currently taking place in the European office furniture sector. The continuous alternation of phases in travel restrictions and lockdowns have prevented the stable return to offices and the continuation of very high levels of remote working, taking to a rise of hybrid workplaces. Many of the trends already underway before the advent of the public health emergency have shown their effects in a shorter period, others will need to be monitored over the next few years to better understand their development.

The world upholstered furniture market exceeds USD 80 billion, overtaking the pre-pandemic level. The leading world-consuming countries for upholstered furniture are the US, China, Germany, the UK, and India.
Imports of upholstered furniture had substantial growth for all the leading importers (USA, Germany, France, UK, and Canada). The opening of the major upholstered furniture markets has grown over the last ten years. Exports registered a remarkable increase for Vietnam and Mexico. With the supply chain and freight issues that are interesting to the furniture industry, the leading upholstered furniture manufacturers invested in diversifying their manufacturing footprint by establishing production facilities in those countries.

The outdoor furniture market in Europe is one of the best performers in the furniture sector. It represents about 3% of the total furniture consumption and, following a slight reduction in 2020, it recorded a double-digit rebound in 2021, well over the sector average. The largest outdoor furniture markets within Europe are Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy, accounting for a combined market share of over 50%. According to CSIL, consumption of outdoor furniture in Europe is expected to evolve positively also in 2022 and 2023.
The outdoor furniture market is an open one with imports representing a large share of consumption. This is due to the substantial increase in imports from Asia and Eastern Europe and to significant outsourcing and dislocation policy among the European manufacturers.

Business performance is provided for 15 countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom) selected for their representativeness in the outdoor furniture sector within Europe.
With a value amounting to over EUR 15 billion, the ready-to assemble (RTA) furniture industry throughout Europe outperformed the fully assembled one, recording a growth of about 17% (2016-2021). Poland and Germany are the leading producing countries. Over the last twenty years, Eastern Europe eroded market shares to some traditional furniture manufacturing countries.
On the demand side, the consumption of RTA furniture in Europe recorded a cumulative growth of +20% in the time span 2016-2021. Germany, the UK, France, and Italy are the largest markets for RTA furniture in Europe, accounting for over one half of the total market.

Products coverage: Living/dining room furniture; bedroom furniture; children furniture; furniture for office/home office; kitchen furniture; other furniture.
The European furniture market registered a decrease of 1% in 2020 over 2019, which was more than compensated in 2021 with a growth of over 10%, reaching almost EUR 140 billion. Europe still plays a key role in the global furniture market, being the second-largest market coming after the Asia Pacific and before North America. Within Europe, the largest markets are Germany, the UK, France, and Italy, absorbing altogether over 60% of the total European furniture consumption.
During the last decade, the furniture retailing sector has experienced structural changes. Looking at the past three years, the pandemic accelerated a massive change in consumers behaviour, with an unprecedented increase in online sales, which currently exceeds 10% of the total European furniture market. It is reasonable to assume that e-commerce will retain its relevance even after the crisis.

In 2021, the World office furniture market increased to a value of around USD 50 billion, despite the persisting effects of Covid-19. The European market and Asia-Pacific are showing more marked rebound, while the United States are still recovering slower than the average.
The sector is, in general, increasingly opening to the international trade. For the world as a whole, imports/consumption ratio has gradually increased reaching 24% in 2021. The largest importer of office furniture is the US followed by Germany, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
The office furniture potential demand is still constrained by the low office occupation rates and the high level of remote working activity. However, CSIL forecasts on the growth of the world office furniture demand in 2022 are positive.

The new and enhanced edition of this study offers an comprehensive picture of the global office furniture sector, providing basic data for production, consumption imports and exports for the time series 2012-2021* (*preliminary), international trade and major trading partners, world tables and economic indicators, market prospects up to 2023, summary tables for the 60 most important countries for office furniture production, consumption and trade, profiles of the 50 leading office furniture manufacturers on a global level and, new in this year edition, a focus on the Top 20 office furniture countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam) which also includes major office furniture manufacturers by turnover (over 400 companies in total) with short profiles of the main ones.
According to CSIL, the World furniture market has resumed in 2021, with furniture consumption level well above the pre-pandemic values, and it is expected to further increase in 2022 and 2023.
Over one third of the world furniture consumption is presently imported. The leading importers on a global level are the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom and the preliminary data for 2021 show major increases (in current US$) in furniture imports for all these countries.
More than 75% of furniture imports to the US originated from Asia (mainly from China, Vietnam and Malaysia). Within the total US furniture imports from Asia, the share of China has decreased because of trade tensions, in favour of imports from Vietnam, in particular.

Production of office furniture in Asia Pacific and China amounts to around US$ 24 billion. In 2020, China, the main producing country in the area, Taiwan and Vietnam have been able to increase their production level, despite the drop in their local consumption due to lockdown measures, exporting the majority of office furniture output to neighboring and worldwide destinations.
In terms of demand of office furniture, the Asia-Pacific region is still experiencing uncertainties due to the pandemic. While original office space is reducing, however, hybrid workstyle and remote working are expanding. Thus, the CSIL outlook for the office furniture consumption in the area is positive for 2021 and 2022, with different performance among countries.

With a furniture consumption value in the range of EUR 90 billion, accounting for around one-quarter of the global market, Europe is the second-largest furniture market in the world, coming after the Asia Pacific and before North America. The EU furniture sector is highly integrated, both from a market perspective and from an industrial one (over 80% of furniture demand is currently satisfied by European production).
The role of Europe in the global context is also evident in the international trade of furniture: the area accounts for around 45% of world furniture imports and nearly 40% of world furniture exports.
Within Europe, the largest markets are Germany, the UK, France, and Italy, absorbing nearly 60% of the total European furniture consumption. According to CSIL, those leading markets are forecasted to increase furniture consumption in 2022 above the European average.

With an increase of 30% in 2020 over 2019, with different performances worldwide, and an expected further growth for 2021, the online channel currently represents a relevant share of the world mattress retail market, surpassing the value of US$ 10 billion.
The United States is by far the largest market for online mattress sales. In Europe, the smallest markets as Spain registered the highest growth rates in online mattress sales for 2020. However, traditional markets as Germany and the UK have continued to grow at extraordinary rates (double-digit growth). The Asia Pacific area is among the fast-growing and promising areas for online mattress sales. China leads the e-commerce mattress market of the region.
The online mattress market is fragmented and highly competitive. Given the increasing interest in the online mattress business by different industry operators, it is reasonable to predict a greater competition is expected in the coming years.

The world mattress market amounts to around USD 30 billion, registering an overall good performance mainly due to sustained demand for mattresses in major markets and an increase of online sales, which have also continued during the lockdown periods. CSIL forecasts for world mattress consumption are positive both in 2021 and 2022, even if with different performances in different areas and countries.
Trade tensions between the US and China and other important mattresses exporters to the US have persisted during 2020. However, international trade of mattresses has continued to increase, mainly driven by a large increase in US imports (a double digit growth over 2019). In this regard, remarkable are the increases in mattress exports from Vietnam and Indonesia, which become the third and fourth mattress exporters, respectively.

The world upholstered furniture industry showed positive responses to the crisis in 2020.
World consumption of upholstered furniture is worth nearly US$ 70 billion. The world upholstery industry has been remarkably successful in recovering from the crisis in 2020. Return of consumption to the pre-pandemic level is likely to happen already in 2021 for the world as a whole, with the speed of recovery different in different countries.
